Survive the Night Guide

Night is where Decaying Winter earns its reputation. The daytime loot phase ends, the sky darkens, and EDEN-227 sends waves of scavengers, then militarized raiders, then supernatural threats that test every mistake you made while sharing meds. This guide covers defensive positioning, role responsibilities, ability rotation, fall-back timing, and the mental checklist that separates night-seven evacuations from night-four votekicks.

Night structure overview

Each night is a defend the hold scenario. Enemies spawn in waves with escalating density and special units. Early nights (one through three) teach spacing and ammo discipline. Mid nights (four through six) introduce raider pressure that punishes isolated players. Late nights (seven through ten) combine everything—supernatural elites, armor, and resource drain—requiring comp synergy from the Team Comp Tier List.

Sunrise resets to day loot unless you hit evacuation on the final night. Wiping deletes the run—see How to Play for full session flow.

Pre-night setup checklist

Before the first enemy spawns:

  1. Confirm Frontline (Zealot, Arbiter, Berserker) is in the chokepoint center.
  2. Place Backline (Artillerist, Executioner) on angles with escape paths—not open fields.
  3. Position Support (Lazarus, Sovereign, Hivemind) where abilities hit the lane without blocking shots.
  4. Verify med and ammo shares from Looting completed.
  5. Assign a fall-back call word in chat (“stack”, “door”, “yard”).

Skipping step four is the most common pub wipe cause.

Frontline night tactics

Frontline players set the tempo. Hold the choke, break scavenger clusters, and absorb first contact so Backline can aim. Arbiter uses Knuckle Boom for stun and burst—time abilities between reloads, not during dehydration debuffs. Zealot trades sustained tanking for lower burst—stay in the doorway, not five meters forward.

Call when you drop below half health so Lazarus can react. Dying silently wastes Support cooldowns.

Backline night tactics

Backline players prioritize targets: armored raiders, supernatural elites, then trash scavengers if Frontline is stable. Artillerist needs clear lanes—if a teammate stands in your line, move yourself, do not shoot through them. Executioner saves burst for priority spawns announced in chat.

Conserve ammo on nights two and three even if it feels easy. Nights six through eight drain reserves when raiders stack.

Support night tactics

Sovereign thralls should bait focus away from Frontline, not block Backline shots. Hivemind swarms belong on the approach path, not inside the hold where bees help enemies clutter your view. Lazarus heals on call, not randomly—Frontline should type “need med” early.

Prophet and Crosslink comps from organized groups rotate buffs before wave spikes, not after half the squad is down.

Fall-back and wipe prevention

Fall back early when:

  • Frontline med kits hit zero and Lazarus is on cooldown.
  • Supernatural elites spawn inside your hold instead of the lane.
  • Two players are down simultaneously.

Controlled fall-back to a secondary choke preserves lives. Heroic last stands lose entire runs and XP from Grind XP.

Wave-specific notes

Scavenger nights — test aim and melee spacing. Do not waste Executioner burst.

Raider nights — armor and focus fire appear. Sovereign and Hivemind value spikes here.

Supernatural nights — positioning errors kill instantly. Read telegraphs in Enemies and Map and avoid chasing kills outside light.

Traits that help at night

Calm stabilizes aim for Backline during chaotic waves.

Fearless helps Frontline trade damage without panic retreat.

Relentless rewards players who maintain pressure through long raider phases.

Professional keeps gun handling crisp when frame drops hit during supernatural effects.

Video tips

The embedded video demonstrates hold positions and wave pacing visually. Pair it with Role Builds so you know which job you are filming from—Frontline center, Backline angle, Support rear.

Surviving the night is a team sport. Play your role, call early, and save hero moments for evacuation day—not night three.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Decaying Winter questions.

Why do teams wipe on night four specifically?

Raider pressure jumps while med stocks from early loot are empty. Restock on day four and five aggressively.

Should Frontline chase kills outside the hold?

No. Short leash around the choke keeps Backline firing and Support abilities aligned.

How do I learn supernatural attack patterns?

Read Enemies and Map, die a few times intentionally in lower stakes nights, and watch teammates who main late-game perks.

Is votekicking fair after a bad night?

Only for griefing or intentional team damage—not for one rough wave. Communicate before kicking.
